Today is blissfully quiet as I begin this message. I’m not a big fan of the local fireworks which individuals buy and blast off. For about an hour last night I thought we were in a war zone. It brought to mind our service men and women who are serving in war zones and the threat is very real to them.
I’m not against celebrating the 4th of July. We spent some time with family and enjoyed a meal together. We are fortunate to live in a land where we can gather together any time we choose. Some countries people mill around, insecure in what might befall them at any moment.
However, as great as it is to gather as we like, I don’t think too many of us truly realize the sacrifice that many have given so we might enjoy a day of celebrating the freedom we have in this country.
The same goes for our worship of Christ and what He did for us. We gather each Sunday (and other times of the week) to worship God and spend time with others who seek Him. Do we really take time to think about the sacrifice God gave for us? Maybe once in awhile it really hits home but I bet many of us take Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for granted. As we gather this coming Lord’s Day, let’s try to focus on His great love for us and the all consuming sacrifice that allows us freedom to be called children of God.
